Highlights from 1865:
January 31 - Congress approves the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, abolishing slavery. The amendment is ratified on December 18.
March 4 - President Lincoln was inaugurated.
April 9 - Gen. Lee surrendered his Confederate Army to Gen. Grant at Appomattox Court House, Virginia.
April 14 - President Lincoln shot by assassin John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theater in Washington, D.C.
April 15 - At 7:22 in the morning, Lincoln died from his wound.
April 26 - John Wilkes Booth shot and killed by Union forces pursuing him.
May 4 - Lincoln laid to rest in Springfield, Illinois.
June 2 - The last Confederate forces surrender.
