February 9 - The Confederate States of America was formed with Jefferson Davis as president.
February 12 - Lincoln visited Cincinnati on his way by train to Washington, D.C. for his inauguration. This was Lincoln's 52nd birthday.
March 4 - Lincoln was sworn in as 16th president of the United States.
April 12 - Civil War began with Confederate bombardment of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina.
July 21 - First Battle of Bull Run in Virginia.
