April 3 - The Pony Express's first run left St. Joseph, Missouri, and arrived in San Francisco, California, on April 14.

May 18 - Lincoln nominated to be Republican Party candidate for president.

November 6 - Abraham Lincoln elected president of the United States.

December 1 - First installment of Charles Dickens' Great Expectations published in England.

December 20 - South Carolina seceded from the Union. Eventually eleven states secede.
