Highlights from 1859:
August 27 - The first oil well in the U.S. was drilled in Pennsylvania.
September 17 - Lincoln delivered speech in Cincinnati as part of speaking tour in Ohio. This was Lincoln's second visit to the city, having come on legal business in 1855.
October 16 - Abolitionist John Brown led an unsuccessful raid on Federal Arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia.
November 24 - Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species.
