Welcome to the Cincinnati History Library & Archives at Cincinnati Museum Center. To ensure the security and preservation of library materials for current and future generations, use of the collections is subject to the following rules.
Researchers using the Library must complete and sign a Registration Form. By completing and signing this form, you agree to abide by the Library’s rules and regulations. A photo ID must be presented at the time of registration. The Library keeps records of collections use, including research topics and materials requested. These records are for administrative use only.
No coats, purses, etc. in the Library
A coatroom is available off the Library lobby. All personal belongings, including coats, umbrellas, purses, backpacks, briefcases, zippered portfolios, tote bags, laptop cases, shopping bags, file boxes, books, and newspapers, must be placed in the coatroom. Lockers are provided for the convenience of our patrons. The Cincinnati History Library & Archives is not responsible for lost or stolen articles. Security cameras are located throughout the Library, and personal belongings may be subject to inspection before leaving Cincinnati Museum Center.
No food, no beverages, and no smoking
No use of cell phones, cameras, or scanning devices
Only pencils may be used in the Library
Pencils are located throughout the Reading Room. When taking notes, place paper on the table, not on the material being used. Laptop computers are permitted provided such use does not disturb others.
Materials must be handled with care
Many materials are old, rare, unique, and are easily damaged. Please turn pages slowly and carefully. Never lay open books face down on the table or prop them open with another book or object. Acid-free strips of paper are available at the Reference Desk for use as page markers. If you find uncut pages, please take the item to the Reference Desk. Never try to cut them yourself. Theft or mutilation of library materials is a crime that will be prosecuted. (Ohio Revised Code, 2935.041)
Call slips must be turned in by 4:30 p.m.
This is a closed stack library, and most materials must be retrieved by Library staff. A call slip should be completed and signed for each item requested and must be turned in at the Reference Desk before 4:30 p.m. Call slips are retained by the Library. You may retrieve reference books shelved in the Reading Room, but please do not reshelve them.
Some of the records held by the Cincinnati History Library and Archives may be restricted and may not be open to the public. This may be due to a number of reasons. For example, social welfare agency records may contain sensitive, personal information. To protect the privacy of their clients, some of the information in these records may be restricted.
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) also restricts access to records containing health care information. Currently, this act covers individuals throughout their life and after death.
Please call ahead to inquire about the availability of records containing sensitive information.

If you leave the Reading Room for a short period of time, notify the reference staff of your absence.
